When it’s warm outside, we take turns hosting worship in our backyards on Sunday mornings. When it gets too cold to be outside, we rent space Sunday evenings at Skyridge Church of the Brethren. We move indoors sometime in October, and we return outdoors around April.

We often have snacks first, allowing folks time to roll in and to catch up with each other. Some of us are there a half hour before worship, and some of us stumble in just in time. We gather in a circle once it’s time to start.

We sing religious songs together, read passages from the Bible, and take time to talk just to the kids. Sometimes we listen to a traditional sermon, but other times we discuss the Bible together or engage with it in less heady, more intuitive ways (like with art). We close by sharing prayer requests and praying together.

Afterwards, we talk some more. We enjoy being together!

Yes! Many of us have kids as well. They’re an important part of our community—noise and rambunctiousness and all.

We’re pretty casual, especially when we’re outside. Shorts and T-shirts? No problem. You may want to dress a little warmer for Michigan winters, though…

Some of us have food allergies, too! Let us know what your particular allergy is, and we’ll be happy to accommodate you. For example, we use juice and gluten-free bread when we share communion each month.

When we meet at Skyridge in the colder months, yes with assistance. There are ample accessible parking spaces, the sidewalk is flush with the asphalt, and there is no step up to the building. Inside, everything is on the same level with no steps or bulky thresholds, and there is no raised stage in the sanctuary. The sticking point is doors, as they are not automatic. The outside doors (two doors or just one because we usually leave the inner door propped open) are a medium weight to open. The two doors to access the restrooms are lightweight. Unfortunately, there’s only so much we can do with rented space, so if you give us a heads up the first time, we’ll keep an eye out for you to welcome you in!

When we meet at each others’ homes in the warm months, accessibility depends on the house/yard. Unless it’s raining, we meet outside on grass.

Yes, but because we’re a small group, it’s not possible to be invisible; there’s no “back row” to quietly slip in and out of. (We sit in a circle!) We would love to greet you, yet we also understand if you need to duck out.
